In short. Energy-based and microneedling classes change skin quality and surface texture. What an abdomen with a real skin excess gets from them, and what none of them does.

Key points

  • Quality and quantity are different questions.
  • If the skin over your abdomen is lax and crepey but there is no actual excess of it, treatments aimed at quality are aimed at the right thing.
  • If the skin forms a fold that hangs, no course of quality treatments removes it, and the money is better spent on the rung that does.

Energy-based and microneedling treatments are the rung most often bought by people whose real problem is an excess of skin. This page sets out what they do, so that the decision is made on the right grounds.

What they act on

These treatments deliver energy into the skin to stimulate a healing response, and the collagen that is laid down afterwards changes the quality of the skin. Firmness, thickness and surface texture can improve. The change is gradual and it appears over weeks to months rather than at the end of a session.

What they cannot change

The amount of skin. There is no treatment that makes a stretched covering smaller without removing part of it. A course can make the skin you have look and feel better, and the fold it forms over the abdomen remains, because the fold is produced by the quantity of skin rather than by its quality.

The distinction that decides whether it is worth it

Quality and quantity are different questions. If the skin over your abdomen is lax and crepey but there is no actual excess of it, treatments aimed at quality are aimed at the right thing. If the skin forms a fold that hangs, no course of quality treatments removes it, and the money is better spent on the rung that does.

Why the abdomen responds least of all

Large area, thick skin, and a problem that is usually one of quantity after a major weight loss or a pregnancy. Where there is a genuine excess, the part of the problem the treatment can reach is the smaller part of it, which is why the result is usually smaller than the expectation that was set.

What a course costs you besides the money

Time, and sometimes a delay. Several sessions spaced apart means months before a judgement can be made, and if the honest answer was always an operation, those months were spent on the wrong rung.

When it is the right rung

Where the skin has lost quality without a real excess, where the fold is not the complaint, and where a modest change sustained over time is what you want. It is also reasonable as preparation for skin that is going to be operated on.

What to ask before buying a course

Which layer is this treating, and what will it not change? How many sessions, over how long, and how long any change is expected to last? What would you recommend if I decided not to do this? A clinic that answers all four plainly is describing the same limits this page does.

Treat the skin condition first if there is

  • A rash in the fold that keeps returning, or skin that is raw or weeping.
  • A sore that will not heal, or skin that is breaking down.
  • A lesion on the abdominal skin that is changing in size, shape or colour.

What the ladder contains, and where it ends, is set out in The Abdominal Skin Ladder, from Doing Nothing to Excision. Why removing fat is not removing skin is explained in Why Fat Removal Does Not Tighten an Abdomen.

Frequently asked questions

Do the devices change anything at all on an abdomen?

They change skin quality and surface texture, and some patients see a modest change in how loose the skin feels. Those are real effects. They are not a change in the amount of skin, which is what an abdominal fold is made of, so the visible fold remains after a course has finished.

Why does the abdomen respond less well than the face?

Because of how much skin is involved and how thick it is. The face is treated for fine laxity over a small area with a good blood supply. An abdomen after a large weight loss has a genuine excess of skin over a large area, and the amount of skin rather than its quality is the problem, which is not something these treatments address.

How many sessions are usually involved, and does it last?

Courses are typically several sessions spaced weeks apart, and your own plan may differ. Any change in quality is gradual and is not maintained indefinitely: the skin continues to age, sun exposure continues to act, and the effect of a course fades over time. It is a maintenance-style treatment rather than a one-off correction.

Risks & Limitations

  • Removing fat from under loose skin leaves more skin relative to what is beneath it, so the fold can look deeper.
  • No cream, device or fat-removal procedure removes skin. Only excision does.
  • Scars from skin removal are long and do not disappear. They mature over 6–12 months.
  • Further weight change and a further pregnancy can alter a result.

When to Seek Care

  • A rash in the fold that keeps returning, or skin that is raw or weeping.
  • A sore in the fold that will not heal, or skin that is breaking down.
  • A lump in the abdominal wall that does not reduce when you lie down.
  • Difficulty breathing or chest pain — seek emergency care immediately.
