Meet the Abdominal Skin Team

This site is led and medically reviewed by Tongchun Mao, MD, who performs abdominal and body contouring surgery here and who is responsible for the medical content. The other three physicians contribute what an assessment of the abdominal skin often needs: the center’s surgical standards and its experience of revision, the treatment of the skin itself and of the scar afterwards, and the dermatologic management of a fold that is inflamed or infected before any plan is made.

Tongchun Mao

Tongchun Mao (毛彤春)

Deputy Director & Head of Aesthetic Surgery · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending · Lead Physician of This Site

Abdominal skin assessment · skin, fat and wall told apart · body contouring

Dr. Tongchun Mao is an aesthetic surgeon at Chongqing West District Hospital, where he is Deputy Director and Head of Aesthetic Surgery in its Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and the responsible physician for this site. He personally performs more than 700 operations a year, within hospital standards of assessment, anaesthesia and follow-up.

On this site his part is the examination that establishes how much of the abdomen is skin. He lifts and releases the skin to see how much recoil is left, measures the fold over the belt line, and assesses the fat and the abdominal wall as separate findings, because removing fat from under skin that is already loose makes the fold deeper rather than shallower. Where the answer is that the skin is not the problem, or that the weight has not settled, he says so rather than offering an operation.

Clinical focus

  • Assessment of abdominal skin laxity and what recoil remains
  • Telling a skin problem apart from fat and from a weak abdominal wall
  • Removal of excess abdominal skin, with or without wall repair
  • Sequencing a plan when laxity continues round the flanks and back
  • Assessment of an abdomen after a previous operation has not settled

Removing fat is not removing skin

On an abdomen whose skin is already loose, taking volume out from beneath it leaves more skin relative to what is under it, and the fold can look deeper afterwards. It is the commonest disappointment in this area and it is entirely predictable. Where skin is the problem, only removing skin addresses it.

Shaoliang Wang

Shaoliang Wang (王韶亮)

Director, Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center · Vice Chief Physician, Associate Professor, Doctor of Medicine

Center leadership · surgical standards and complex revision

Dr. Shaoliang Wang is Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team he provides the surgical perspective and the tertiary-hospital backstop — the assessment when an operation is the honest answer, and the hospital-level care for the rare complication that needs it.

Within this site his part is the standard any operation has to meet and the backstop behind it, including the assessment of an abdomen that has been operated on before and has not settled as expected.

Clinical focus

  • Center leadership and multidisciplinary case review
  • Surgical assessment when an operation is the honest answer to descent or excess skin
  • Hospital-based care for the rare complication that needs theatre-level management
Ke He

Ke He (何锞)

Deputy Director & Head of Skin & Laser Aesthetics · Attending Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Skin and laser aesthetics · skin quality and the fold

Dr. Ke He is Deputy Director and head of skin and laser aesthetics within the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team her role is the device and injectable assessment, and the honest referral when a problem needs an operation rather than a needle.

Within this site her part is everything the skin itself needs: treating the rashes and maceration that form in a fold, preparing skin before an operation, and managing the long scar afterwards so that it has the best chance of maturing well.

Clinical focus

  • Device and injectable assessment before any treatment plan
  • Staged planning judged against standardised photographs
  • Honest referral when a problem needs an operation rather than a needle
Yongbo Jia

Yongbo Jia (贾勇波)

Deputy Director & Head of Dermatology · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Dermatology · conditions of the abdominal skin

Dr. Yongbo Jia is a dermatologist within the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team his role is medical skin assessment — diagnosing and managing pigment and barrier conditions, and treating skin that a device or an injection has irritated.

Within this site his part is the skin condition rather than the shape: the fungal, bacterial and inflammatory problems that are common in an abdominal fold, and the assessment of a lesion or a rash that is changing rather than static.

Clinical focus

  • Medical skin assessment behind injectable treatment plans
  • Diagnosis and management of pigment and barrier conditions
  • Dermatologic care of skin after irritation or a delayed reaction

Start with an assessment, not an operation

Arrange a consultation. We will establish how much of the abdomen is skin, how much recoil is left, and what each option would and would not change.
