If there is a rash, a sore, or a lump that does not reduce

Do not wait for a routine cosmetic appointment. A rash in the fold that keeps returning, skin that is raw, weeping or breaking down, a sore that will not heal, or a lump in the abdominal wall that does not push back in when you lie down needs medical assessment. Say what you have noticed when you call, so that the right clinic sees you rather than a contouring list.

Arranging an ordinary assessment

Where the skin is healthy and the weight has settled, appointments are made through the hospital outpatient line or through the appointment service described on the appointments page. Say when booking that the question is about the abdominal skin. If you are travelling from outside Chongqing, say so, because the assessment and any tests can sometimes be arranged across fewer visits.

What to bring

Bring a record of your weight over the last two years if you have one, any previous abdominal surgery, a list of your current medicines and allergies, and the names of any conditions you are being treated for. If you have had weight-loss treatment of any kind, note what and when, because the timing of the loss changes the timing of any plan.

What happens at the consultation

Expect a measurement exercise rather than a presentation. The skin is lifted and released to see how much recoil is left, the fold over the belt line is examined along with the health of the skin within it, the fat beneath and the abdominal wall are assessed separately, and your weight history is reviewed. You should leave knowing how much of the problem is skin, whether anything should be done about it, and what the options and their limits are.
